1. Can you talk about your school and college life in terms of your studies, exams, scoring marks and extra-curricular activities?

As a student, I would like to say that I was not a brilliant kid but a very hard working kid. Since I come from very typical middle class family, my parents were of the opinion that I should take good degree and do a job which will secure my future. So for that I started preparing myself but unfortunately I could not get proper guidance so I was struggling to find my correct path but the moment I found it I tried very hard to achieve it so I did my CMA and my MBA in Finance. Along with that since childhood, I used to enjoy acting, writing script, poems and so on. After 10th standard, my parents did my IQ test and the result was that I can get success in Science or Arts, but I chose  commerce stream and actually I succeeded there too. But while doing all these things, I was aware that somewhere I wanted to build my creative career. But because of this formal education and experience it help me to pursue my passion with calculated risk.

2. You have been a qualified CWA (now CMA) as well as an MBA and have worked with the Tata Group. When was that actual day when you decided that broadcasting / radio jockey is the career for you? What was your family, friends view on your career choice? How did you make yourself ready for that role in terms of skills, attitude, learning?

I think after initial two or three years of my job, I started getting a feeling that this is not my cup of tea. My day used to start with Excel sheet and used to end with Excel sheet and I didn’t wanted to spend my day like that. So, I started exploring career options where I could get stable income as well as creative satisfaction. There Radio came into picture. Before that I was an avid radio listener but after this thought, I started exploring it as my career option.

So, I started in interning with different radio stations. Hearing radio as an audience and working in a radio station are quite different things, so one who wants to become a radio professional should work in actual radio station. Thats the only key to gain knowledge of this field and succeed in this field.

So, the moment I got an opportunity to work as a full-fledged RJ, my immediate family were quite supportive but my some of my other friends and relatives were little bit sceptical about my choice.

3. Can you walk us through your creative process when producing content-rich videos and radio shows? How do you keep your content engaging and relevant?

As far as my videos are concerned, I always look for what I am giving to my viewers through this video, be it laughter be it knowledge be it awareness; there has to be something which reaches a person can take away from my videos. I'm not big fan of scripting my videos or my radio shows, but I believe in spontaneity and I keep doing that.

4. You have made a mark in the broadcasting domain for 15 years now, so how has the broadcasting and radio industry evolved since you started, and what trends do you see shaping its future?

Earlier we used to stretch one topic for more than 3 to 4 hours but nowadays people have very short span of listening, so we have to restrict our topic in 1 hour or two. Due to consumption of 60 sec reels, we also need to deliver our entire topic in one link of 60 secs.

5. You have held multiple roles as a show host, producer, and content creator. How do you manage to balance these diverse responsibilities effectively?

I don’t feel pressure of managing responsibilities because I just madly love all aspects of my job. All you need to do is keep your eyes and ears open.

6. Today in the era of Instagram, FaceBook, OTTs, do you feel people listen less to radio than before? How do you keep your audience engaged so much on air?

Yes, people definitely listen radio because still it’s local, trust worthy & most flexible medium of communication. For eg. if you are travelling to your office and radio station announced there is traffic congestion on your road, obviously you will take another route. This kind of local & useful information is not provided by Instagram or Facebook. Apart from this, radio is also launching new ways of programming which are equally competitive to OTT platforms.

The biggest strength of radio is an element of surprise through music or jock talk… so radio will be forever the heard medium.

7. Can you share some of the most memorable moments or experiences from your career that had a significant impact on you?

There are many such incidents but I would like to quote one. When I was in Nashik , every day I used play one contest in morning time. There was one 86 year old grandpa who used to listen me and used to answer my questions. One day he had to travel to other city for some family work but while going he instructed his daughter in law to listen my show and convey questions to him. Sweetest part was his daughter in law used to do that and used to connect me through conference call with him.

He specifically came to studio on my last day there and hugged me so tightly. I still can’t forget that warmth.

8. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in broadcasting as a whole and Radio Jockey specifically?

Listen… Listen and Just listen to others.

9. How do you spend your time when you are not in the Mirchi office? How is your family supporting you in your current profession?

I like spending time with my friends and family. I have my own Sanskrit play group, so I like doing that. I have friends from my previous finance field and current creative field too. So spending quality time with them is pure bliss.
