Sameer Walgude is a distinguished professional with over two decades of experience in strategic sourcing & global sourcing for the automotive, manufacturing and ITES industries. Sameer began his professional journey at Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. as an Assistant Manager in Strategic Sourcing. He then transitioned to SAP Ariba as a Senior Consultant, where he honed his expertise in digital procurement solutions. Following this, Sameer took on the role of Manager of Group Strategic Sourcing at Essel Group, where he was responsible for overseeing and optimizing the group's procurement strategies.

Currently, Sameer leads the Supplier 360 - Project Vihaan at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s Automotive & Farm Equipment Business. In this role, he is at the forefront of driving digital transformation initiatives and leveraging big data analytics to enhance supply chain visibility and optimize supplier management. His work involves integrating advanced technologies to streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve efficiency across the supply chain.

1. Can you tell us how each of your degrees and certifications has contributed to your professional growth? 

My Bachelor's in Engineering built my technical foundation, essential for optimizing production lines and reducing costs. The PGD in Finance and Banking from Symbiosis enhanced my financial acumen, crucial for strategic decision-making and financial risk management. My MBA in International Business and Operations Management provided insights into global supply chains and operational efficiency. The Six Sigma Green Belt focused on quality management and process improvement, vital for continuous improvement initiatives. Finally, the Leadership Training (HBS and IIM-A) equipped me with advanced leadership skills, essential for driving digital transformation and innovation.

2. How do you ensure transparent communication and effective collaboration among stakeholders in large-scale sourcing projects? 

I develop detailed communication plans and use project management tools. I create RACI charts and maintain clear documentation. I foster an inclusive environment with regular forums and feedback loops. Leveraging technology for real-time data sharing ensures transparency. Regular stakeholder meetings and steering committees are crucial. Sharing performance metrics and managing risks openly is vital. Providing ongoing training and conflict resolution processes, along with empowering teams and scheduling regular check-ins, ensures effective collaboration.

3. What pivotal skills or experiences were crucial for your success? 

My technical foundation includes strong analytical skills from engineering. Financial Literacy involves financial analysis and economic insight. Global Business Acumen stems from my MBA, which supports strategic thinking. Quality and process improvement are rooted in Six Sigma methodology. Advanced Leadership Skills come from training at HBS and IIM-A. Strategic Sourcing Experience includes supplier relationship management and market trend analysis. Digital Transformation Expertise involves integrating advanced technologies. Effective communication and collaboration are key for stakeholder engagement. Adaptability and continuous learning keep me updated with industry trends.

Recent graduates should focus on technical skills like engineering knowledge and software proficiency. Digital and analytical Skills are crucial, including data analysis and knowledge of big data and AI. Industry knowledge involves understanding current trends and regulations. Practical experience can be gained through internships, co-ops, and capstone projects. Soft skills like problem-solving, communication, and team collaboration are essential. Leadership and initiative should be demonstrated through leadership roles and entrepreneurial projects. Certifications and continuous learning in relevant areas are important. Networking by joining professional organizations and finding mentors is vital.

5. How do you stay updated with current market trends in strategic sourcing, and what advice would you give to someone looking to improve their market analysis skills? 

I stay updated by subscribing to key industry publications and newsletters, joining professional associations and attending conferences, using online resources like news aggregators and market intelligence services, and engaging with peers on LinkedIn and professional networks. To improve market analysis skills, focus on research skills through primary and secondary research and enhance analytical skills using tools like Excel, Python, R, and visualization tools like Tableau.

6. What advice would you give to mid-career professionals looking to pivot into leadership positions within the automotive industry? 

My advice for mid-career professionals is to focus on continuous learning to stay updated on industry trends and technologies, build a strong professional network within the industry, develop leadership skills by focusing on strategic thinking, decision-making, and team management, and seek mentorship to guide you through the transition.


7. What future trends do you foresee in strategic sourcing and digital transformations within the automotive industry? 

I foresee increased digital integration with the use of AI and big data analytics, a greater focus on sustainable sourcing and green technologies, more emphasis on resilience and flexibility in global supply chains, and the adoption of blockchain for transparency and efficiency.

8. How have your language skills benefited your professional interactions and negotiations? 

My language skills have enhanced communication with diverse teams and stakeholders, helped in understanding and navigating different cultural nuances, and provided an edge in negotiations by breaking language barriers.

9. Can you share a personal achievement or hobby that you’re proud of and how it has influenced your professional life? 

I am proud of my passion for continuous learning, which includes pursuing hobbies like reading and learning new languages. Hobbies like playing chess have enhanced my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

10. How do you handle tight deadlines and stress? Can you share some of your strategies for managing stress and the activities you engage in to de-stress and recharge? 

I handle tight deadlines by breaking down tasks and prioritizing them effectively. Time management tools and techniques help manage my time efficiently. To manage stress, I engage in activities like meditation, exercise, and spending time with family to recharge.

11. Being a father and spouse, how do you manage your daily routine in terms of family time and personal time? What advice do you give your child about life, career, and success? 

I allocate specific times for work and family, ensuring quality time with my family regardless of how busy work gets. I advise my child to emphasize continuous learning, hard work, and maintaining a balance between personal and professional life.
